My dissertation investigates the research question, ‘How does high fashion fetishise and exploit British working-class culture?’ The dissertation is presented as a collection of eight poster zines, held together by a belly band featuring a plaid design inspired by the patterns commonly found on curtains and tablecloths in traditional caffs, as well as by elements of Burberry’s check pattern.
My dissertation examines this dark, paradoxical relationship that high fashion shares with the working-class community, focusing specifically on the high fashion brand Burberry. I find that the British class system, which divides us, only serves to make the working class more alluring to the elite, while high fashion brands like Burberry seek to replicate the authenticity of the working class.
Each zine folds out to a photograph that serves as a visual representation of everything explained in that zine.
