Starring Lydia Banjo and Aman Chaudhry
A student leaves her home in East London to study Law at university in Durham. Having just graduated and moved back home, she tries to find a job. However, she faces struggles with her social background, in particular her accent, leaving her to question if she belongs in this profession she has worked so hard for.
The Interview is a film reflecting the research question 'How do regional and working-class accents affect desirability in professional settings?' My film explores the serious issue of accent bias with a playful approach, using comedy and satire. Accents are a feature of ours that we enjoy poking fun at, however, the real question is, at what point does this light-heartedness become more of a serious and pressing issue? My project aims to spread awareness of this topic that is not usually talked about, nor taken seriously. My film draws from real-life situations and conversations that I have compiled throughout my life and my time at university.
